Movie Review: Race 2

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ameesha Patel, Anil Kapoor
Director: Abbas-Mustan
Rating: **

A Significant Chunk of Mumbai Filmdom’s creative output has changed for the better since the year 2008, the first quarter of which saw the release of Race, a Hollywood rip-off that had Bollywood critics run for cover.

Nearly five years on, the directing duo of Abbas-Mustan is still at it – cantering around aimlessly with a convoluted thriller that zips, zaps and zooms through an amoral landscape peopled by sharks and bloodhounds whose only trip in life is to settle old scores, hatch new conspiracies and, when necessary, lay murderous traps.

On the face of it, Race 2 is a glitzy, action-packed entertainer. Scratch the surface – in fact, that is all there is to the film – and what you are left with is superficial style bereft of logic and substance.

But, then, isn’t that the failsafe formula that has stood many a Bollywood pulp-maker in good stead over the years?

Race 2 proves how difficult it can be for a producer to let go of an idea that yielded a box-office bonanza the first time around. The makers of this film obviously haven’t heard of, or do not believe in, the law of diminishing returns.

Race 2 isn’t so much a sequel as an ill-advised rehash. Revenge, one character says, is a dish best served cold. Ideas, for sure, aren’t best served stale.

This is the second year in succession after 2012’s Players that Abbas-Mustan have the honour of unleashing the first Bollywood biggie of the year. Race 2, like Players, is big only on nausea-inducing clatter.

The obvious question is: does this slapdash scurry to the finishing line really have the steam to replicate the kind of runaway box-office success that the prelude had enjoyed?

Or will Race 2 go the way of the wayward Players, the Burmawalla siblings’ official Hindi remake of the British crime caper flick, The Italian Job?

At the heart of Race 2 are two wrangling men endowed with sculpted bodies and an ingrained air of masculine insouciance.

The brawny John Abraham (replacing the relatively scrawny Akshaye Khanna of the earlier film) ensures that the sequel has a markedly higher beefcake and testosterone quotient.

Keeping the boys company is a trio of bimbos all too eager to flash generous décolletage while playing second fiddle. All of the above is, of course, par for the course in an Abbas-Mustan film.

Many of the faces and the principal location have changed in the sequel, but the overall veneer is pretty much the same.

Race 2 is slickly packaged around dramatic twists and turns that fly at you thicker and faster than you care to count.

Race 2 moves at a fair clip and is packed with explosions, stunts and chases that might be crowd-pleasing. The trouble is that the narrative is too breathless for its own good.

To be fair, some of the implausible action sequences are startlingly good. However, they do not add up to a convincing enough whole that can paper over the holes in the narrative.

Some Bollywood directors tend to labour under the misplaced belief that a film must be crammed, end to end, with relentless excitement, extravagant dance routines and ear-splitting background music for it to find ready takers. Excess does not always yield success.

The action in Race 2 takes place in Turkey, where, we learn, that the Indian underworld is just as active as it is back home.

Ranveer Singh (Saif Ali Khan), a rare remnant from Race, scours the hot spots of Istanbul in search of the mastermind behind the killing of his beloved Sonia (Bipasha Basu in a cameo).

In his risky quest, Ranveer has to contend with a slew of men and women who, like him, are out to make a quick buck and get the hell out of here.

And, of course, there is ex-cop Robert D’Costa (Anil Kapoor), the only man who Ranvir seemed to be at ease with when the curtains came down on the first film.

The private eye has a gloriously daft female assistant in the form of Ameesha Patel. The actress isn’t seen much these days on the screen. Just as well!

Istanbul generally looks great as a backdrop through the lens of Ravi Yadav’s camera and much of the film is rather easy on the eye. But when the cars and bloodthirsty men get in the way, they only serve to muck up the view.

As for the women on the screen (Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandez), they strut around like wound-up automatons that are all decked-up but have nowhere to go.

Is Race 2 on your mind? Get rid of it pronto. This is a wreck of a movie strictly for action junkies who might be looking for a feverish two-and-a-half-hour ride that is far more giddy than heady.

The film, directed by Rajiv S. Ruia, also has Katrina Kaif, Hrithik Roshan and Rajneesh Duggal in cameos.

Annu Kapoor : Awards Always Motivate

His Role in ‘Vicky Donor’ has been appreciated with a Filmfare trophy, and an elated Annu Kapoor admits such honours always help boost an actor`s morale.

Still remembered for his comical act as an editor of a newspaper in hit movie ‘Mr. India’, the actor said: "Awards always motivate and make you want to up your game."

Made at a meagre budget of Rs.5 crore, the film on sperm donation went on to become one of the top earners of 2012 by raking in Rs.45 crore. More importantly, there was no big name in the cast, which consisted of two newcomers Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam along with Annu Kapoor and other character actors.

Annu has won Filmfare award for the best supporting actor in ‘Vicky Donor’, directed by Shoojit Sircar.

‘Vicky Donor’ will always be a very special film for me because this is the film where the story is the hero and this fact has been proven now," Annu said in a statement.

"Shoojit has done a brilliant job with the story and everyone who was a part of this film is a winner," he added.

Filmfare was Annu`s second award for his ‘Vicky Donor’ role of a funny and obsessive doctor who arranges sperm donors for those couple who are unable to have children.

Earlier, he won Screen Award for the best actor in a comic role for the same film.

An equally talented host, known for anchoring shows like ‘Antakshari’, the 56-year-old actor will next be seen in ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana 2’ alongside three Deols - Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby.

"I am willing to Entertain the people all the time as long as one character is different from another and makes me want to portray it," said Annu.

Inkaar : Movies Review

Cast: Arjun Rampal, Chitrangda Singh, Vipin Sharma
Direction: Sudhir Mishra
Rating: ****

Sudhir Mishra’s ‘Inkaar’ is an intriguing tale about office romance, professional jealousy and sexual harassment at the workplace. It could have been a tedious linear narrative but the director’s layered approach keeps the viewer hooked till the very end.

Maya Luthra (Chitrangda Singh) is a small-town girl who comes to Mumbai aspiring to make it big in the advertising world. Rahul Verma (Arjun Rampal), CEO of the company mentors her as she begins her climb up the ladder in the professional world. They have a brief affair which soon falls apart. A few years later when she is back in the city as one of the board of directors of the company, there is a clash of ideas and egos between the lead pair. A sexual harassment case ensues but it is difficult to take sides as you hear both sides of the story and realize that this is a not a simple open-and-shut case. The film manages to draw you in and keeps you engaged as you try to figure out whether Maya is really a victim or just a women scorned seeking revenge aka Demi Moore style (Disclosure)? Is Rahul really innocent or is he just too suave to get caught?

Sudhir Mishra deftly plays with the greys in this story steering clear of any form of titillation. He addresses stereotypes that exist in every work environment but at the same time doesn’t reinforce omnipresent Bollywood stereotypes like a compulsory gay character or ambitious women with no morals. While the story switches between the perspectives of the two lead characters, the director manages to step back and remain detached to the extent that his portrayal is in no way biased towards either sex.
What works for ‘Inkaar’ is the solid performances by the lead characters and the supporting cast. Arjun might not been very strong in the emotional bits but he delivers one of his best performances till date. Chitrangda looks and acts sharp, it’s a pleasure to watch Vipin Sharma, Deepti Naval and Kanwaljeet on the big screen after quite a while. Shantanu Moitra music is as usual peppy and hummable.

This one is Definitely a Must Watch.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola | Movie Review

 (Comedy/ Drama)Saibal Chatterjee

Cast:- Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma, Pankaj Kapur
Director:- Vishal Bhardwaj

SPOILERS AHEAD
A stationary stretch limo parked on a desolate farmland revs up and drives right through a ramshackle liquor kiosk, bringing the structure down in a mangled heap. The owner flees and two men – the car driver and his inebriated master – ransack the shop and make off with as many bottles of a local brew as the vehicle can hold.

That – the opening sequence of Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola – sets the tone for the rest of the film. It is a wild, wacky, wicked satire that carries the unmistakable Vishal Bhardwaj signature. But it leaves you with mixed feelings.

It isn’t a big, bloated blockbuster wannabe. It has its daring share of moments that defy popular expectations.

It is a spirited comedy that has its heart in the right place. It has something to say about what is going on in this country in the guise of a skewed development model in which farmers thirst for electricity to irrigate their land while humongous shopping malls a few kilometers away glitter all day long.

UnfortunatelyMatru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a bit like the micro light two-seater that one of the three eponymous characters, driven by drunken bravado, decides to pilot. Sure enough, it crash lands because his flying wherewithal is limited to getting the aircraft airborne – he has no idea how to bring it back to terra firma.

Bhardwaj’s first all-out comedy faces pretty much the same plight. It soars and hits the high gears with aplomb, but does so only occasionally. The eventual landing resembles a nosedive more than anything else. If not an outright wreck, the result isn’t always a pretty sight.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is Bhardwaj’s most political film to date. It tackles the sombre theme of political corruption and capitalist greed against the backdrop of a small Haryana village fighting to save its arable land from being acquired for a proposed special economic zone.

But much of the political posturing that the script is built around is at best superficial and unsurprising. The humour is laboured at times and the potshots the film aims at a system that thrives on unbridled abuse of power and pelf is often rather feeble.

Despite the uneven quality of the ambitious narrative, Bhardwaj packs in just about enough quirky energy to make Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola generally watchable.

The film blends the freewheeling air of a nukkad natak with structured elements of Shakespearean drama and epic Greek theatre to deliver a surreal tale that borders on burlesque.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is marked by an adventurous streak that is commendable: Bhardwaj pushes the goofy storytelling style all the way through to the bitter end. It is another matter that the strategy boomerangs frequently.

The characters and their wayward ways are only mildly interesting. A pink buffalo haunts Harry ‘Moneybag’ Mandola (Pankaj Kapur) when he is sober. It strays into his bedroom, plonks itself beside him and flashes a grin.

The cranky old man turns into a socialist with a bleeding heart when he is high. Mandola even leads a protest march against himself only to suffer an abrupt change of heart when dawn breaks and his hangover subsides.

Set up against him is a rustic incarnation of Mao, a man the villagers have never seen. In apparent absentia, he spearheads the agitation against the conspiracy to forcibly acquire fertile agricultural land.

Mandola’s sidekick, Hukum Singh Matru (Imran Khan), is a JNU-educated son of the soil who takes up cudgels on behalf of the long-suffering peasants when he is allowed a long enough rope by his crotchety employer.

Mandola’s daughter, Bijlee (Anushka Sharma) – we see her for the first time emerging suggestively from a pond as hordes of villagers sit around watching the spectacle – is a bit of a temperamental termagant given to mood swings.

Bijlee is engaged to the buffoon-like son (Arya Babbar) of a Chaudhary Devi (Shabana Azmi), a powerful politician who is desperate to make a fast buck by fast tracking Mandola’s plans to set up a factory in the village. And Bijlee’s hemming and hawing is a pretext for a love triangle that ends with a messy wedding.

The red rag on which the shadowy Mao writes his agitprop edicts is contrasted with the colour pink that suffuses the film. The desi daru that Mandola consumes is called Gulabo and is sold in a pink bottle. Sadly, the splash of colours does not seep deep enough to make a lasting impact.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is hurt the most by the erratic performances of the lead Actors. Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma, playing villagers who have been educated in the big city, are anything but consistent with the Haryanvi patois and accent.

Pankaj Kapur is the pivot of the film. However, his character is over-wrought, if not over the top.

The actor pushes himself as far as he can within the limitations imposed on him by the screenplay, but this performance of his is unlikely to rank among his best.

There are moments when Kapur is delightfully droll, but he often lapses into the unintelligible, especially when Mandola sinks into a drunken stupor.

Shabana Azmi is saddled with what is almost a walk-on part. There isn’t much she can do to add value to the mix.

Be that as it may, I would still recommend Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola

Few filmmakers in Mumbai engage with ideas and issues of contemporary relevance as felicitously as Bhardwaj. He might have fallen short this time around, but even when he is not at his best, he is infinitely better than most in the business. A director who does not fear failure merits our support.Get More Latest News and Daily News Updation Visit Daily our Blog,

10 SEO Techniques

We Recently discussed the 15 Key Elements All Top Web Sites Should Have. This post focused on elements relating to design, content and development. This time, we’ll move onto the important issue of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is such a hot topic these Days.
How do you get your web site within the first page or two of the search engines?
How do you increase your Google page rank?

However, there are some simple things you can do when building your site that will help increase your chances of having good results. In no particular order, below are 10 of these items…

1. Title Tag
Near the very top of a web site’s source code you’ll find various meta tags — the standard ones being the Title, Description and Keyword tags. The title tag is technically not a meta tag, though it is commonly associated with them. The title tag plays such a large role in the indexing of your web site, that it is considered the most important of the three.

A Page Title is the first thing a search engine will look at when determining just what the particular page is about. It is also the first thing potential visitors will see when looking at your search engine listing.

It’s important to include a keyword or two in the title tag — but don’t go overboard – you don’t want to do what’s known as “keyword stuffing” which does nothing but make your web site look like spam. Most people will include either the company name, or title of the particular page here, as well.

2. Meta Tags
There are two primary meta tags in terms of SEO — the description and the keyword tag. It’s debatable whether the search engines use the description tag as far as ranking your results. However it is one of the more important tags because it is listed in your search result — it is what users read when your link comes up and what makes them decide whether or not to click on your link.

Be sure to include a few relevant keywords in this tag, but don’t stuff it with keywords either. The description tag should read like a sentence — not a keyword list.

3. Proper Use of Heading Tags
This is a very important element to consider when writing out your site copy. Use of heading tags helps users, web browsers and search engines alike know where the major key points of your copy are.
Your main page title should use the <h1> tag — this shows what your page is about.
Use of additional tags, such as <h2> and <h3> are equally important by helping to break down your copy. For one, you’ll see a visual break in the text. But as far as the search engines are concerned, it will automatically know what your topics are on a page. The various heading tags give a priority to the content and help index your site properly.

4. Alt Attributes on Images
Putting alt attributes on your images actually serves two purposes. In terms of SEO, putting a brief yet descriptive alt attribute along with your image, places additional relevant text to your source code that the search engines can see when indexing your site. The more relevant text on your page the better chance you have of achieving higher search engine rankings.

In addition, including image alt attributes help the visually impaired who access web sites using a screen reader. They can’t see the image, but with a descriptive alt attribute, they will be able to know what your image is.

5. Title Attributes on Links
Including title attributes on links is another important step that any good web site will have. That’s the little “tool tip” that pops up when you place your mouse over a link. These are especially important for image links, but equally useful for text links.

As a note, you should use descriptive text for your links. “Click here” doesn’t really tell a person – or more importantly, the search engines — what the link is. At the very least put a title tag that will explain that “Click Here” really means “Web Design Portfolio” for example. Better yet – make the main link text something like “View my web design portfolio” — this will give some value to the link showing that the resulting page is relevant to searches for portfolio’s.

6. XML Sitemap
My last post referenced the sitemaps used by web visitors to help them navigate through your site themselves. However, there’s another version — XML sitemaps — that are used by the search engines in order to index through your site, as well.

This list of ALL pages / posts / etc. of your site also includes information such as the date the page was last modified, as well as a priority number of what you feel the most important pages of your sites are. All elements that help the search engines properly find and link to all content of your site.

7. Relevant Content
Having content relevant to your main page or site topic is perhaps the most important SEO aspect of a page. You can put all the keywords you want in the meta tags and alt image tags, etc — but if the actual readable text on the page is not relevant to the target keywords, it ends up basically being a futile attempt.
While it is important to include as many keywords in your page copy as possible, it is equally as important for it to read well and make sense. I’m sure we’ve all seen keyword stuffed pages written by SEO companies that honestly don’t make much sense from the reader’s point of view.

When creating your site copy, just write naturally, explaining whatever information you’re discussing. The key is to make it relevant, and to have it make sense to the reader. Even if you trick the search engines into thinking your page is great — when a potential customer arrives at the site and can’t make heads or tails of your information and it just feels spammy to them — you can bet they’ll be clicking on the next web site within a matter of seconds.

8. Link Building

We’ve probably all heard of Google Page Rank — it seems to be every web site owner’s dream to have as high a page rank as possible. While the algorithm for determining page rank encompasses many elements, and is constantly changing, one item is the number of links pointing to your web site.
Now, you’ll want to steer clear of link farms and other spammy attempts at getting links to your site. However there are many reputable and niche directory sites that you can use to submit your web site, or specific blog articles to.

9. Social Media
Although technically not SEO, Social Media is such a growing factor in getting your web site noticed, that it’s an important element to include in your plan.
Social media ranges from social networks like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn — to social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon and many more. There is a lot of relationship building involved, but as you build your own networks and build quality content on your web site or blog, you’ll see traffic to your web site increasing, as well.

10. A Few SEO Don’ts — Flash & Splash

Along with any list of Do’s come the Don’ts. As far as SEO is concerned, two of these items are splash pages (often consisting of a flash animation) and all flash web sites.
Yes, flash is pretty! Full flash web sites can actually be amazing to look at — their own bit of interactive artwork. But unfortunately the search engines don’t get along well with Flash. Although there is talk of possible advancement in this area, for the most part the search engines cannot read Flash.

A good alternative to both issues is to make use of a flash header. There’s no problem to include a flash animation at the top of your main site, or as a feature within the content area, etc. Because this is an addition to your web site, as opposed to a full separate element.
