Assam TEA World Famous, Not NaMo Chai: Gogoi

Assam tea world famous, Not NaMo Chai: Gogoi

Guwahati: Taking a dig at 'NaMo Chai', Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said branding tea in the name of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was an insult to world famous Assam tea and the people of the state.

"Modi tea is an insult to the world famous Assam tea. It is an insult to Assam. It is an insult to the people of Assam," he told a press conference here.

Gogoi said Assam tea was known for its flavor and Variety, but not 'Modi tea'.

As part of its poll campaign, BJP was trying to cash in on Modi's tea seller background by serving tea as 'NaMo Chai' at various poll-related functions.

The move had attracted the ire of the Uttar Pradesh Election Commission which objected to the party serving free tea to influence voters and also taken note of Modi's 'Chai pe Charcha' programme.

Gogoi also alleged that Modi was communal and BJP was responsible for demolition of Babri Masjid.

"He (Modi) is also trying to divide the Barak Valley from Brahmaputra Valley...He doesn't have Trust in Democracy. He is spreading hatred," he added.

Ahmedabad Receives Special Mention in Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2012

Ahmedabad Receives Special Mention in Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2012

A statement by the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize attributed the special mention to the AMC for “its early Successes in implementing a comprehensive City Development Plan, which aims to transform India’s seventh largest city into a more livable, equitable and sustainable metropolis with a dynamic multi-sector economy and an emerging auto-hub.” The statement goes on, “as it displays the first sign of dramatic physical transformation, Ahmedabad sends a message of hope to cities that are seeking to rise above the proliferating problems of pollution, worsening traffic conditions and inadequate affordable housing.”

The Statement notes the encouraging role played by Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi in this remarkable urban transformation. It attributes the AMC plan’s (that is in line with the Gujarat State Urban Development Year 2005) commencement success to intensive public consultations and the inspiration and leadership of Shri Modi.
The Prize authorities acknowledged the key elements of the plan that are:
To unlock land potential through urban reform.
To Invest in environment and Infrastructure.
To ensure inclusive development to address issues of the urban poor beyond basic needs.

Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening.
The statement lauds the AMC for its vision combined with strong political will for tackling civic issues pertaining to Ahmedabad. “AMC has distinguished itself as a forward-looking organization and an inspiring model for sustainable development. Its early achievements reaffirm the importance of a clearly articulated and holistic vision combined with strong political will in tackling urban problems” it read.

In particular, 3 Unique Projects in Ahmedabad that have been mentioned as illustrations of the city’s strides towards urban regeneration:

JANMARG (AHMEDABAD’S BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM):

Ahmedabad’s BRTS has been lauded for addressing public transport needs of the city as well as being the first step in a more comprehensive transport plan to Ahmedabad. The Special Mention states that BRTS has witnessed a rise in public transport usage and not only has it caused a Ccatalytic effect along BRTS corridors but also reduced air pollution significantly due to the CNG component.

Started in October 2009, Janmarg is one of the prime examples of innovative strides in urban development. Currently, it has a network length of 45 km and another 40 km is under construction. 67 BRTS bus stations are operating today and the transit system has over a hundred buses criss crossing the streets of Ahmedabad. On a given day, an average of 1,13,200 citizens use the system.

At a time when the BRTS implementation has come under strain in several urban centres, Ahmedabad’s Janmarg stands out as an inspiring exception. Janmarg has been the recipient of many Domestic and International awards since 2009.

KANKARIA LAKE REDEVELOPMENT

In the last decade, the Gujarat Government made a committed effort to completely overhaul the area surrounding Ahmedabad’s iconic Kankaria Lake. The Special Mention of the Lee Kuan Yew award notes this qualitative change in Kankaria Lake.

“Equally visible is the 2008 Kankaria Lake redevelopment. This former dilapidated and polluted royal bathing ground is now a vibrant cultural and recreation centre after implementation of practical solutions to improve the environment, organise traffic movement and rehabilitate the food vendors” reads their statement.

Today, the area surrounding the Kankaria Lake has become a much-visited place by Ahmedabadis and visitors from nearby areas. The annual Kankaria Carnival has become a true celebration of life that draws a variety of people from all walks of life. In 2011, Shri Modi unveiled a 2,500 sq ft sandstone mural, which is a part of a 30,000 sq ft project to bring back to life the glorious history of Gujarat since the ancient times.

SABARMATI RIVERFRONT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

On the successful development of the Sabarmati Riverfront it was noted, “The Sabarmati Riverfront project, now in development, will have an even greater impact on the city as it addresses flood, sewage and water pollution issues, relocation and rehabilitation of slums, and the provision of new public and open spaces.”

At the heart of Ahmedabad’s unique identity is the Sabarmati River. It is truly the lifeline of the city but over the years it had become better known as a dry patch of land that could host circuses and cricket matches. But, over the past decade the Sabarmati River has received a phenomenal facelift making it one of the most visited public places in the city.

Today, the Sabarmati Riverfront combines aesthetic beauty, recreation space, a hub for informal markets and the site that hosted the annual International Kite Festival. It has also added tremendous value in terms of reducing sewage and water pollution in the city.

Just a few days ago, KPMG ranked the SRFD Project among the top 10 most innovative projects towards urban regeneration. Recently, in April this year the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) received HUDCO National Award 2012 for innovative infrastructure development for the Riverfront Project Tenders.

Gujarat is Poised Towards Attaining Newer heights in the area of urban development and such recognition will surely serve as a great impetus to Team Gujarat’s Handwork, Dedication and Determination in creating better cities.

Sensex Hits 22,000 Mark

Monday has been a historical day at the Indian stock market, with Sensex and Nifty hitting their Highest Levels in their history.
Sensex hit the Psychological 22,000-mark for the first time and moved up for a brief period to touch 22,005.54.

The same happened at the National Stock Exchange index. The 50-share Nifty also saw a lifetime high of 6,548.75 points in its first trading session on Monday.

Stocks of rate sensitive sectors such as capital goods, realty and banking were trading well.

But this High was for a Short Time only.

Later, throughout the day, Sensex and Nifty were trading on narrow ranges. Stocks of metal, IT, healthcare and auto sectors led the fall.

Brokers said apart from the emergence of profit booking by funds and retail investors at record levels, a subdued trend in the other Asian bourses impacted the sentiment here.

"Asian stocks edged lower as weaker-than-estimated Chinese trade and inflation data stoked concerns over the outlook for the world's second-largest economy," said a market analyst.

So what were the reasons?
"This can be described in one sentence - a 100 per cent Narendra Modi rally," said Mehraboon Irani, principal and head of private client group business Nirmal Bang Securities.

Sunil Shah, senior stock analyst at Khambatta Securities, said: "FIIs are putting a lot of money - almost $1 billion in the last trading sessions. Liquidity has driven the market. But they are putting money over the assumption that the BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi will come to power. His image is investor-friendly. He will give impetus to the economy. As a result, the GDP will grow and so will Corporate earnings."

But the fact remains that fundamentals within the Indian stock market are still what they used to be two months ago - "not very encouraging".

"Valuation-wise, the market is expensive. Except CAD (current account deficit) which has improved, I don't see any much improvement in underlying fundamental as of now," Said Shah.

Even Shah warned investors to think twice before putting money in the market at the present level.

"Till the elections, the tenders market will remain choppy and volatile.
So investors need to be cautious."

However, FIIs, who turned net sellers in the Indian markets earlier this year on concerns of tapering in the US and slowdown in China, are back with a bang.

FIIs have bought index futures worth Rs.3,889 crore ($636.55 million) in March, already heading towards their biggest monthly purchases since October when the total monthly amount reached Rs.4,566 crore.

Arvind Kejriwal reaches Varanasi to launch epic Political Battle

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal arrived in Varanasi to kickstart what would be the most-watched political contest in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Kejriwal is scheduled to visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple, perhaps the city's best known temple. He will interact with morning walkers at some parks, besides calling on retired academics and current professors at the Banaras Hindu University.

The AAP leader, who shocked Congress by unseating it from power in Delhi after 17 years, has said he is willing to contest against Modi, but would file papers only after seeking opinion -- today's visit is meant for the exercise -- from the people of Varanasi.

But most AAP workers believe the visit is a formality and Kejriwal has already decided on challenging BJP's PM nominee and candidate for the seat Narendra Modi.

In Contesting Against Modi, Kejriwal has signalled that he is willing to take his pugnacious Battle with Modi a step further.

During his Gujarat tour in which he claimed to have exposed Modi's development model and in calling out the mainstream media as being pro-Modi, Kejriwal has posed a direct challenge to the PM-aspirant.

The BJP may dismiss it as a no-contest but Kejriwal has demonstrated willingness to take Modi head on, something that the Congress has been diffident about.

Polling for the Varanasi seat will be held on May 12, four days before votes are counted, in the final round of the nine-phase elections that kick off on April 7.

Kejriwal hasn't been known to shy away from taking political risks and his poll battle with Modi will invariably become a big story till the Lok Sabha polls end.

The Kejriwal-Modi face-off will admittedly be big on political messaging, but the battle for Varanasi would be fought outside the constituency — at rallies that both leaders address across the country over the next two months.

The Party was keen to pit Kejriwal against Modi in a repeat of Delhi but outside Gujarat, a party leader said.

"We wanted him to take on Modi only if he contested from outside Gujarat so that the Gujarat CM would not have the language advantage," the leader said.
